Alpha Sigma Alpha

Our Story...

On Nov. 15, 1901, a new sorority was organized and named Alpha Sigma Alpha at Longwood University, in Farmville, VA.  As stated in the charter, “The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mold such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.” Signatures to this document include those of Alpha Sigma Alpha’s five Founders: Virginia Boyd Noell, Juliette Hundley Gilliam, Calva Watson Wootton, Louise Cox Carper and Mary Williamson Hundley.  There are currently over 145 chapters of Alpha Sigma Alpha nationwide with more than 100,000 members.  The open motto of the sorority is "Aspire, Seek, Attain."

Our chapter, Epsilon Upsilon, at California University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1991.  We develop women of poise and purpose everyday in as many ways as possible by helping out around the community and by participating in our philanthropies, Special Olympics and S. June Smith Center (Lancaster PA).  As a sorority we fulfill the four aims of Alpha Sigma Alpha through intellectual, physical, social and spiritual activities in everyday life.  The purpose of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to foster close friendships between members and develop women of poise and purpose.
